  • 31/05/2017 - Statement on World No Tobacco Day

18/04/2017 - Joint stakeholder statement on the employment of people with chronic diseases

ECDA is coordinating the production of a joint stakeholder statement on the employment of people with chronic diseases, via a thematic network on the EU Health Policy Platform.

The present initiative aims to enhance a collaborative work by interested EU organisations from the health, social or employment sector to share their perspective on the current situation for people with chronic diseases on the employment market and underlying issues with EU policy-makers and provide policy recommendations for change.

Involvement can take the form of drafting part of the statement, or providing input and adding to the paragraphs produced by other stakeholders.

The paper aims to be a living document until a final version is agreed upon in late October 2017.

Organisations interested in partnering with the ECDA in this work can join the thematic network on the EU Health Policy Platform, or email at info@alliancechronicdiseases.org

10/04/2017 - 14 Health NGOs ask MEPs in the CULT committee to reduce child exposure to unhealthy foods and alcohol

On the 10th of April, 14 EU health organisations wrote an open letter to the members of the European Parliament Committee on Culture and Education, in light of the committee's draft report on the European Commission's proposal to revise the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD).

The proposal includes provisions governing commercial communications for foods high in fat, sugar, and salt (HFSS food) and alcoholic beverages to children and minors.

However, the Committee's draft report weakens the provisions, proposing in particular to delete the one article that explicitly addresses the marketing of HFSS food.

The full open letter is available here.

From 13 to 15 November 2015, more than 200 delegates attended the Global NCD Alliance Forum in Sharjah (UAE). ECDA was delighted to be present at the Forum and to contribute by co-leading the workshop How to work effectively as an alliance and find common ground for increased impact, along with the Patient Health Alliance of Non-Governmental Organisations (South Africa) and the British Richmond Group of Charities (United Kingdom).

At the workshop Emilia Miloiu, Secretariat Manager of ECDA, spoke on behalf of the Alliance about

The Power and Effectiveness of Regional Coalitions – experiences from the European Chronic Diseases Alliance

Representing the convened national and regional NCD alliances, the Forum culminated in adoption of the "Sharjah Declaration on NCDs: Civil Society United Towards 2030". The Sharjah Declaration is a global expression of NCD civil society's commitment to engage in advocacy and accountability to advance the NCD response, and ECDA is proud to have played a pivotal role in its finalization.

The Forum was a successful example of knowledge sharing, networking and advocacy strengthening. 03/12/2015 - EC Report concludes that EU action is needed to set legal limits on trans fats

The Commission's preliminary report suggests that setting a legal limit for industrial TFA content would be the most effective measure in terms of public health, consumer protection and compatibility with the single market.

The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) adopted a resolution requesting the UN Secretary-General to establish a United Nations Interagency Task Force on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases. The UN will define and agree on a common system-wide division of roles and responsibilities to efficiently support national country efforts to address NCDs in the coming year. It is vital that UN organizations increase their capacity to deal with NCDs, develop joint programmes with WHO, and mobilize partners including governments, NGOs and the private sector, while safeguarding public health from any potential conflict of interest.

10/04/2013 - ECDA members join forces to participate in EU funded project addressing chronic diseases

The EConDA project will examine the best method for assessing the cost-effectiveness of interventions to prevent chronic diseases. It aims to develop a forecasting model that estimates the future cost burden of these diseases as well as the cost impact of interventions which aim to prevent them. Sixteen organisations are participating in the project under the leadership of the UK Health Forum, including eight members of the European Chronic Disease Alliance, WHO, OECD and two universities. EConDA is a two-year project starting in April 2013 with final results expected by April 2015.The total budget allocated to this project is of 1.3 million EUR with 60% coming from the European Union Health Programme 2007-2013. In providing clear and reliable figures on both the burden of chronic diseases and the potential savings of interventions, the project will be a valuable tool for policy makers in making the case for action on chronic disease – in particular within the framework of the on-going EU reflection process on chronic diseases.
